It’s not something we like to think about, however the hard truth is that most of us will need some form of care once we reach our golden years.
Many wait until they or their loved one requires care, only to find it a difficult process to navigate.
There is however steps that you can take now to better prepare yourself.
1. Educate yourself
Sterile white nursing homes are a thing of the past. Today, nursing homes have evolved. Striving to create a more positive patient experience, from environment to quality of care, the nursing homes of today are not your Grandmother’s nursing home.
There are also several care options now available depending on the level of care you require.
Study the different options available so when the time comes, you have an understanding of what might be best for you or your loved one.
2. Find out what is nearby
Research what care options are readily available in your area.
The My Aged Care website is a great place to start. Established by the Australian Government, it has been designed to help you navigate the aged care system.
Be sure to conduct your research carefully. Do not just rely on the internet. Once you have identified some providers, call and setup a tour or meeting to learn more first hand.
3. Plan for the cost now
The cost of care can vary depending on your needs and it is important to understand options in financing your care.
4. Think about your care, make a plan and communicate this to your loved ones
While you are still capable of making your own decisions, consider your care wishes and share these with your loves so they can be honoured. It will help to give them peace of mind and prevent questions, confusion or disagreements.
5. Determine when it is time
Be on the lookout for early warning signs e.g. forgetting to pay bills, confusion is common, clothes are not being washed.
Recognising that we need care is difficult. Preparing now can help relieve some of the pressure and stress. That way, when the time comes, you can find peace of mind in knowing you’ve made the best decision for you or your loved one.
